NURTURING SKILLS WITH OPEN BADGES

Through Open Badges, Expo not only feeds the planet but skills too: the EU Pavilion at the Universal Expo in Milan was animated and brought to life by 840 young volunteersfrom all over Europe willing to embark upon an educational and relational project. Selected by Ciessevi (Voluntary Services Centre for the Metropolitan City of Milan) and trained in in eLearning by Amicucci Formazione, the volunteers found in the Expo Experience an opportunity to grow their wealth of experience and knowledge, to meet people, make contacts and set up relationships as well as effectively increasing their abilities and skills, many of which are soft-skills: highly prized in the employment world, but also difficult to prove. For this reason Ciessevi has decided to endorse their experience by awarding volunteers an Open Badge (Ambassador or Volunteer Team Leader, depending on the role played), which proves the skills developed in this context and which can easily be circulated by the young people on social networks, in their CVs, blog etc. The essential feature of the Open Badge is the capacity to facilitate visibility and to communicate the experiences gained, making it especially suitable for endorsing the abilities and skills brought into play by the volunteers, and which are so often undervalued by the actual volunteers themselves.
