INGREDIENTS OF A TRAINING PATH FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF DIGITAL SKILLS

In this article explains the ingredients needed to create an engaging training path for the improvement of digital skills. What are the contents required to start a training project for the development of digital skills? It may seem trivial, but the first step is to define what we want the path to focus on. Below we attempt to identify some of the topics that can be grouped under the umbrella of the development of digital skills:

  • Digital literacy (online search, information management, computer security)
  • Digital life-style (awareness, digital life balance, specific apps)
  • Software training (CRM, intranet, LMS)
  • MS Office training and other common work tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Development of a digital mindset (learning agility, cognitive agility, flexibility)
  • Training on the key tech trends (artificial intelligence, IoT, blockchain)
  • Training on vertical competencies specific to certain organisational functions (digital marketing, industry 4.0, train the trainer from a digital point of view)

These are just some of the more common requirements and are all needed for the digital transformation of people (“Digital Skills: what training does your company need?”). Learning mix Once the priority topics for your organisation have been identified, you need to identify the most suitable tools. Given the challenge and the large amount of new knowledge, skills and behaviour needed and which need to be developed in as short a time as possible, e-learning training is very well suited to the purpose. Although seminars, events, digital breakfasts, classrooms and digital aperitifs are essential to stimulate people’s curiosity and enthusiasm on the subject, these channels are often not enough. Speaking of e-learning, the use of a gamified training course has gained great consensus and results among people (“Gamification in the company: play as a creative and non-competitive tool”). Contents Several types of content can be used to create learning path: – content built on an ad hoc basis with the help of experts inside and outside the company – ready-made content: skilla has a catalogue of over 16 Training Pills® and 120 short videos that can be used on your own path – network resources: resources of great value, drilldowns and comprehensive courses that can be used on our path can be found online – content already present in the company that can be reworked, thereby enhancing corporate training capital Platform Speaking specifically of e-learning courses, having a platform with the right functionalities for the creation of engaging learning dynamics is essential. For example, having a leaderboard, a comment and content rating system, a space where people can share contributions, a system that issues badges and a user friendly and easy-to-use interface are important for the creation of gamified training paths (“skillaHUB: do you know the new tools? The integrated training environment is undergoing a continuous technological evolution!”) Communication campaign The communication campaign is crucial to the success of the path: the ability to engage people and create expectations is important. It is advisable to use teasing e-mails, infographics, posters, intranet banners, sms text messages and presentation videos. In addition to providing information on the initiative, the aim of a communication campaign is to create a sense of belonging and give the perception that the topics involved are relevant to people’s work. It is also important that the company’s leaders participate and promote getting the path underway (“Three steps to communicating and involving participants in an e-learning path”). New technologies require many changes in terms of behaviour, habits and knowledge. Often, training on these topics can cause resistance instead of creating enthusiasm for something new. That is why it is important to measure the various ingredients of the path and create stimuli that lay the foundations for future initiatives and continuous self-learning on the subject.
