THE WEBINAR REVOLUTION

A Webinar allows the elimination of the limits of classroom training and the sharing of content among persons located in different geographical areas. However, technology by itself is unable to guarantee success. So, which are the main difficulties in organising this type of live event on the net? To start with, there needs to be a clear understanding of the main functions of the software available on the market, getting to grips with the various tools and identifying which common mistakes to avoid. The phase that precedes the online seminar should be used to write down a schedule, prepare a checklist and edit the slides to render them simple and effective. During the Webinar it is advisable to take the utmost care when welcoming participants, so that they may become immediately aware of the tools available, socialising with each other through a chat function, microphones and webcams. When presenting topics, it is good practice is to address the audience, getting them involved by using catchy expressions in order to maintain a high level of attention. Lastly, always remember to use detailed summaries. After the Webinar, it is appropriate to send thank-you emails to all the participants (follow-up), obtain feedback via online questionnaires and share any detailed material. Furthermore, it is very important to observe the following guidelines drawn from experience:

  • optimal connectivity
  • professional equipment
  • punctuality
  • materials loaded in advance
  • look directly at the webcam
  • welcome and thanks

And, last but not least, always inject some enthusiasm, which is the basis of all good lessons! This topic was discussed in posterLab no. 7: “Training with webinars” Guido Gaetani
